GOWN CARE TIPS… BECAUSE YOU LOVE YOUR GOWN!

HANGING:

  • Hang your wedding gown by loops found inside your wedding gown that are connected to the sturdy side seams. If there are no loops, make some from ribbon and sew them onto the side seams of your wedding gown.

STORING:

  • avoid storing your wedding gown in a plastic bag (even a clean sheet is better than a plastic bag) because plastic bags emit fumes that can yellow your bridal gown. Today most bridal shops offer “breathable” bags made from tyvek, but you can also buy tyvek bags online.
  • avoid storing your wedding gown in a vacuum-sealed, shrink-wrapped container not only because shrink-wrapped containers can trap moisture that can mildew your wedding gown but also because wrinkles do not press out of a wedding gown that has been shrink-wrapped.
  • avoid storing your bridal gown in the attic or basement where there are extreme changes in temperature or humidity. Avoid resting your wedding gown chest against outside walls, too, because dampness can migrate through the wall and penetrate the wedding chest.

CLEANING:

  • ask what kind of precautions do your cleaner takes to protect delicate trims and decorations on your wedding gown and how the cleaner guards against the latent stains on your wedding gown. Latent stains are very, very common and many cleaners do not know how to find and remove them.
  • choose a Certified Wedding Gown SpecialistTM (like us) for the cleaning of your gown. You should discuss the stains on your wedding gown with the Specialist to be sure they will be removed properly and completely.
  • ask to inspect your wedding gown personally before it is put into the container, which should be a completely acid-free, archival-quality wedding gown chest lined with fabric or acid-free tissue. pH-neutral wedding gown chests are not truly safe for your wedding gown because they can re-acidify. Acid-free wedding gown chests cannot re-acidify because all acidic content has been completely removed during the manufacturing process.
  • ask about the Guarantee. Today or twenty-five years from today, who will honor the guarantee?
